THE DEVIL HERSELF

Chapter 24

Lyric was in her room, absorbed in her phone, when a sudden, sharp pain pierced through her heart. She gasped, the intensity of the pain catching her off guard. Clutching her chest, she tried to ignore it, but the pain intensified. A sudden metallic taste filled her mouth, and before she knew it, she had spat out a handful of blood. Panic set in as she staggered weakly towards the door, blood now flowing freely from her nose and ears.

"Not now... Please, not now..." she muttered, struggling to maintain her balance.

Her vision blurred, and her mind raced back to that moment during the war when she had been injected with a strange, water-like liquid. She had saved her sister, Lucky, from taking the injection. Was it poison? A shiver of dread ran through her as the realization hit her like a tidal wave.

The more she walked, the more she felt life slipping away from her. Just when she thought she couldn't go on, she saw Scar coming from the hallway, heading towards the bar.

"Scar..." Lyric's voice was barely a whisper, but it was enough to get Scar's attention.

Scar turned, her eyes widening in horror as she saw Lyric's blood-soaked figure. She rushed to her side, catching her just as she was about to collapse.

"Lyric! What happened?" Scar's voice was frantic, her hands trembling as she held onto Lyric.

"It... It was the injection... during the war..." Lyric managed to gasp out, her breaths shallow and labored.

Scar's face paled, her eyes filling with tears. "Hold on, Lyric. I'm taking you to the Clan's clinic. Just hang in there!"

With immense effort, Scar half-carried, half-dragged Lyric to the clinic. As soon as they burst through the doors, the medical team sprang into action, laying Lyric on a stretcher and rushing her into an examination room. Scar immediately called for Lucky and Lotus.

The room was a flurry of activity, the beeping of machines and frantic shouts filling the air. The doctor worked quickly, assessing the extent of Lyric's condition.

"We need to stabilize her!" the doctor barked orders to the nurses.

Lyric's eyes fluttered open, and she saw the worried faces of her sisters, Lucky and Lotus, as they burst into the room.

"Lyric! No!" Lucky cried, tears streaming down her face. "You have to stay with us!"

Lyric tried to smile, but it turned into a grimace of pain. "I'm sorry... I didn't know it was poison..."

The doctor's face was grim as he finished his examination. "We need to get her to a hospital immediately. The poison has ravaged her organs. We can't treat her adequately here."

A flurry of motion followed as Lyric was transferred to an ambulance. Clan members gathered, their faces etched with worry and fear, as a convoy of cars formed behind the ambulance. The sirens wailed as they sped towards the hospital, the weight of the situation pressing down on everyone.

At the hospital, the medical team was ready. Lyric was rushed into the operating room, her sisters and Clan members waiting anxiously outside. The head surgeon, Dr. Matthews, briefed his team quickly. "We're dealing with severe internal damage. The poison has compromised her vital organs. We'll do everything we can."

The surgery was a grueling ordeal. Hours passed as the doctors worked tirelessly to save Lyric's life. Outside, Lucky and Lotus held onto each other, their hope fading with every minute that ticked by.

Inside the operating room, the situation grew increasingly dire. The poison had done more damage than they had anticipated. Lyric's heart, already weakened by a preexisting condition, struggled to keep going. "Her heart is failing," one of the nurses said, her voice trembling.

Dr. Matthews shook his head, his expression grave. "We're losing her... Give me 10 cc of epinephrine, now!"

They tried everything. Every possible intervention, every bit of medical knowledge and skill was brought to bear. But in the end, it wasn't enough. Lyric's body had endured too much.

At 3:47 a.m., Dr. Matthews called it. "Time of death: 3:47 a.m."

Dr. Matthews walked out into the waiting area, his face lined with exhaustion and sorrow. The Clan members stood up, their eyes full of questions and dread.

"I'm sorry," Dr. Matthews began, his voice heavy. "We did everything we could, but the poison had already caused too much damage. And with her preexisting heart condition... she couldn't make it."

A collective gasp went through the room. Lucky collapsed into Lotus's arms, her sobs uncontrollable. Lotus held her tightly, her own tears falling freely.

"No... No, she can't be gone!" Lucky cried out, her voice breaking. "She can't leave us like this!"

Lotus shook her head, as if in denial. "She was so strong... How could this happen? How could she be gone?"

The Clan members bowed their heads in sorrow, their hearts breaking at the loss of one of their own. The grief in the room was palpable, a heavy weight that seemed to press down on everyone. Lucky pulled away from Lotus, her face streaked with tears. "This can't be it... There has to be something we can do..."

Dr. Matthews placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "I'm so sorry. We tried everything. The poison was too strong, and her heart was too weak to fight it off."

Scar, who had been standing quietly in the corner, finally spoke, her voice choked with emotion. "Lyric saved my life more times than I can count. She was a warrior... She didn't deserve this." "She saved all of us, in one way or another," Ryder added, his voice thick with grief.

Lucky and Lotus clung to each other, their tears mingling as they mourned their sister. The pain of her loss was a wound that would never fully heal, a scar that would remain with them forever.

Scarlet, Rachel, and Diego returned from the warehouse, exhausted but relieved that the cooking oil had been successfully packed. But as they approached the Clan's headquarters, they noticed something was off. The usual bustle of activity was missing, and the few members present seemed subdued.

Piper, typically energetic and cheerful, was pacing back and forth, her eyes fixed on the ground. She didn't even notice their arrival until Scarlet called out to her.

"Piper, what's wrong?" Scarlet asked, her voice laced with concern.

Piper's gaze snapped up, and she greeted them with a somber expression. "Scarlet, Rachel, Diego... it's Lyric. She's been taken to the hospital, and we haven't heard anything since."

Scarlet's heart skipped a beat. "Which hospital?"

"Graceland Hospital," Piper replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

Without hesitation, the trio rushed to the hospital, their minds racing with worst-case scenarios. As they arrived, they found the rest of the Clan members gathered outside the emergency room, their faces etched with worry and fear. Scarlet's eyes scanned the group, searching for any sign of Lyric. But it was Scar who approached her, tears streaming down his face.

"Scarlet... it's Lyric. She took an injection meant for Lucky during the war... it was poison. She's gone."

Scarlet's world stopped. Her vision blurred, and her heart felt like it had been ripped from her chest. She didn't cry, but her eyes burned with a fierce red glow.

Rachel, however, collapsed into sobs, her body shaking with grief. Diego, Tyler, Vincento, Dracula, and Ryder stood like statues, their faces stoic, but their eyes betrayed their pain.

As the reality of Lyric's fate sank in, the Clan members began to wail and mourn. The sound of their anguish filled the hospital corridors, a haunting echo of their collective sorrow.

Soon, the medical staff emerged with a somber expression, and Lyric's lifeless body was wheeled out of the theatre, destined for the mortuary. The Clan members parted, allowing the stretcher to pass, their faces contorted in grief. Scarlet's eyes never left Lyric's pale face, her mind reeling with memories of their laughter, their battles, and their unbreakable bond. She felt a piece of her soul tear away, leaving a gaping hole that could never be filled.

As the mortuary doors closed behind Lyric's body, the Clan's cries and wails grew louder, a chorus of heartbreak that seemed to shake the very foundations of the hospital. Scarlet's eyes still burned with that fierce red glow, a testament to the fire that now fueled her very existence - the fire of vengeance and justice for Lyric's senseless death.
