Chapter 0026
Chapter 0026
Caroline's POV:
I was shocked at the speed in which William returned, but despite witnessing the anger on his face, I was unafraid. He had been lying to me for all these years, scheming against my father. Did I ever truly know the man I married?
"I knew you were in dire straits, Caroline," William sneered, "but are you seriously this poor? You're resorting to stealing trade secrets from me now, is that it? How dare your**
In the face of such ugly accusations, my disappointment in him only grew. The wretched man before me was nothing but a complete stranger. I feared to think that the man I loved had been nothing but a facade.
Instead of indulging his baseless accusations, snagged the laptop and turned it to face him. Surprise and anger flitted across his face as the video was shown to him again. "What is this?" I demanded.
A sneer tugged at William's lips. "You tell me.
Anger roared like a fire in my core. How could he speak to me like that in the face of all the evidence laid before him? "Do you have anything to do with the bankruptcy of my father's company?"
William grabbed the laptop from my hands and slammed it shut, his eyes narrowed with disdain. "You think you have a right to demand answers from me?" The device was thrown onto the desk without care for its safety. "Are you telling me you have no idea what your precious father did to Sophia?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," I retorted. "My father wouldn't hurt a fly! Even if something did happen, there must be some type of misunderstanding!"
"Misunderstanding?" William snorted, incredulity lacing his voice. "Are you really so stupid that you can't see it? Your father was just trying to get a bigger deal between our companies through our marriage! He forced Sophia out of my life and let you replace her to satisfy his own ambitions!"
"What are you even talking about?" I cried out. Was William just delusional? Surely this was some sort of horrible misunderstanding. Never would my father be so callous and manipulative.
My confusion must have been a genuine shock to William, because his gaze held only anger -tinged disbelief. "Are you telling me that you didn't know anything? If he was really so innocent, then how would I have found evidence of his crimes, huh? He deserves everything that's coming to him!"
Anger shot up my throat and I could no longer stand to listen to his delusions. "You have

no idea what you're talking about," I spat, forcing my way past him. "You're Insane!"
William followed close behind me, a furlons retort on his lips, when he heard the doorbell ring. His temper settled some and he took a moment to consider me with a spiteful glare. "We're not done with this conversation," he growled, heading towards the door. Exhaustion from the fight overtook me, too confused to respond to him. I was lost in my own head, too overwhelmed by the flood of information to process what to do next.
I nearly leapt from my own skin when I registered Laden's voice from the front door. A bolt of fear ran through me at the prospect of my illness being revealed. If William found out about my illness, he would never leave me alone again. It would be the excuse he needed to play with my feelings and leave me feeling worse and less Independent than I already was.
Overwhelmed with panic, I rushed into the kitchen. I would do everything in my power to - never let William learn about my cancer. I desperately needed him out of my life, even if
that required taking desperate measures.
My mind was set in stone as I grabbed a knife from a drawer, and I didn't hesitate to use the wicked blade to slice into my arm. As long as the wound was serious, I could escape the invasive examination from William and his doctor.
I hissed in pain as crimson rivers dribbled down my arm. My wound would definitely need careful stitching, and more importantly, a hospital. Just in time, a maid came around the comer to grab some supplies and released a horrified scream the moment she saw my state. She dropped her supplies and ran to grab William, Laden, and the doctor, who all came to me in a panicked rush. William's mouth gaped in shock. "What did you do?" he accused, horrified at what he was seeing.
The doctor hurried over and took my arm into his careful hands. "It's too deep," he told the others. "I didn't bring enough supplies to deal with it. We need to get her to the hospital."
Determined to get his idiotic examination, William tried to protest. "But-
"Now, Mr. Anderson," the doctor snapped.
In a burst of fury ex-husband swore and stepped away for a moment to consider his options.
While William was raging and the doctor was busy frantically talking to Laden, I hurriedly pulled out my phone. My first instinct was to turn to a friend for help, and so I messaged Martin, desperation typed into each word. Martin, I need your help! William is taking me to the hospital. He's trying to find out about my diagnosis. He can't know about my illness!"
