Under the Heiress' Facade

Chapter 716

Chapter 716

Johnson did a full body check-up for Hera yesterday afternoon. The injury on her left hand was mostly external, but the nerves might experience spasms after surgery.

Bernard tidied up her acupuncture kit before putting it away. Based on his understanding of Hera, she could stay up until dawn if he did not stop her.

Hera didn't insist any further when she remembered that she would be visiting Lucius tomorrow. Thus, she let Bernard wrap her in his arms as he lay by her side.

Since it was a single bed, Hera still had some space if she slept alone. With two people lying on the bed, it was clearly cramped.

Bernard lay on his side so that he could leave as much space for Hera. She lay in his arms but could not fall asleep." What if my left hand ends up being useless? What should I do?"

Yesterday, Hera did not want Catherine to worry. Hence, she pretended to be unbothered in front of her.

In reality, it was impossible for Hera to not care. After all, she was an ordinary person.

"I'll take care of you." Bernard kissed her forehead. "Besides, you're Dr. Shadow. You have to trust in your own medical skills. Be good, and stop overthinking. Just go to sleep."

Hera stayed silent as she began pondering about their future. She ended up falling asleep while lost in thought. She slept until 11:00 am. Johnson waited until she woke up before delivering breakfast and medicine to her. "Still no feeling in your left hand?" Johnson asked as soon as Hera finished her breakfast. He received a text from Bernard early in the morning about the condition of her left hand.

Hera tried moving her fingers but still felt nothing. She shook her head. "Nothing. Please arrange a CT scan for my hand and an MRI for my cervical spine."

"Sure. I'll go make the arrangements now," Johnson said before leaving to make the arrangements. Not long after, he returned to take Hera for a check-up.

After completing both scans, Hera came out and happened to spot Neil speaking to Bernard, who seemed rather aloof, in the corridor.

Bernard ignored Neil after noticing that Hera was out. He immediately walked to her side and led her to the ward. As Hera brushed past Neil, she spotted the troubled expression on his face. After returning to the ward, she finally asked Bernard, "What did the Killians want from you?"

"Chad asked me to take over Rhett's job at Killian Corporation's headquarters," Bernard answered. That wasn't a surprise to him. As long as he did not permit Rhett and Frederick to be released, Chad had no one else to rely on in the family.

"Are you going to get promoted and an increased salary?" Hera teased.

"I rejected the offer," Bernard explained.

Hera wasn't surprised after recalling Neil's troubled expression.

As far as everyone knew, Chad did not care for Bernard. They would always fight whenever they saw each other.

Hence, Chad sent Bernard away to the military as soon as he could. Once Bernard returned from military service, Chad transferred him to a branch company.

The Killian family only thought of Bernard when in times of need. If Hera were in his shoes, she wouldn't be happy either.

Bernard noticed that Hera did not seem astonished at all. "Aren't you shocked that I rejected it?"

"What's there to be surprised about? You're the CEO of XS Corporation," Hera answered.

Bernard chuckled quietly. Hera did know him well.

Hera knew that Bernard established XS Corporation to go against Killian Corporation. But she couldn't understand why he refused to clear Lucius' name if he was determined to rebel against the Killians.

Was Bernard loyally following Lucius' orders? She wondered if Bernard actually killed Greg or acted as an accomplice to the murder. Did Lucius take the blame for him?

Hera thought she would only know the truth after meeting Lucius.
