Chapter 623
Chapter 0623
"Check-up." Nicholas bit the words, glaring at me with frustration. "Do you even know what the check-up is?"
I was stunned. 'Are you asking me? Let the doctor come in and explain it to you, I'm not sure!"
I stood up and headed toward the door, but he caught my wrist before I could reach it. His eyes were slightly red, and there was an intensity in them I couldn't decipher.
I thought he was angry about my refusal to remarry, so I tried to soothe him.
"Getting a check-up isn't a bad thing. Even if you don't have children with me, you'll have them with someone else. It's all for the health of the child, so just bear with it, alright? After all..."
After all, raising Tabitha these past few years had been tough. If we could, we should try to avoid any health risks for the child.
"Forget it. Never mind."
I had intended to comfort Nicholas, but it hurt as if I had bitten my own tongue. The more I said, the more realized that continuing would only hurt me, him, and Tabitha.
"Do you still not believe that I just want to marry you, just want to have children with you? What do I have to do for you to believe that I love you and only want you?"
Nicholas stood up and blocked my way. In my eyes, there was nothing but him.
His expression turned cold as he grasped my chin, lifting my face to make me look at him. 'Or do you want me to have children with someone else?"
"Stop it!" I pushed his hand away, feeling drained. "You'll remarry eventually. You're in your 30's, Nicholas. Stop saying things out of spite.
"We're over. If the test results come back fine, I'll have the baby and consider it borrowing your genes.
"I'll admit, I probably can't stand the idea of anyone else touching me. I'll pay you if needed. We'll settle the accounts, and from then on, we'll have nothing to do with each other's marriages."
"Nothing to do with each other? Your heart must be made of stone!"
"What's wrong with you now? Didn't you seem happy just a minute ago?"
The red in Nicholas' eyes was different this time. It was filled with hostility and pain.
"When you said "I can't accept another man' in this context, there's nothing for me to be happy about."
"But I'm telling the truth. If you can't accept it, I could consider trying someone else. After all, in today's world, there's nothing money can't buy!" I retorted.
Nicholas sneered.
"All my patience has been used up on you. But let me warn you, don't even think about involving anyone else. "If I find out, I won't hesitate to ensure he can't have children, ever. Try me-I'll deal with one after another if I have to. I might as well get a dog, one trained to bite where it counts."
A shiver ran down my spine. The image his words conjured sent a chill through me. Was he some kind of butler in a past life, obsessed with controlling every aspect of others' lives?
And seriously, how could he possibly go after every man out there? If he could stop them all from having children, I'd have to admit he was impressive.
Anyway, who spoke up for the dogs?
I rolled my eyes but kept the complaints to myself. It was pointless to provoke him further. Otherwise, the "butler"
might get angry again.
Nicholas grabbed my hand and led me out the door.
The doctor hurried over and asked, "So, have you two reached a decision? Shall I proceed with arranging the check -up for Mr. Hawk?"
I glanced at Nicholas, unsure of what to say. He'd been so upset earlier, and I couldn't tell if he was willing to go through with it. After all, I couldn't force him into anything if he didn't want kids with me.
"It's up to you." That was all I could say.
"Of course, we're doing the check-up," Nicholas said suddenly. Then, he turned to the doctor and added, "I want my wife to be with me the entire time."
