Teach a Teacher a Lesson

Chapter 8

Sam walked into the classroom, disappointed. In a month, school was going to be over, and he still hadn't managed to win Rita over. He had tried anything he could think of, but nothing had worked. To top that, the rumors about Rita having an affair with Chris were not rumors anymore. He had seen them in public with his own eyes.

He took his seat, put his elbows on the desk and rested his head on his hands. What else is there to do, he wondered.

"So, Sam, are you going to the end of the year ball?" Ben asked and sat next to him.

"I don't know," he replied absentmindedly. "Are you?"

"Yeah, I've asked Mary to come with me."

"Mary, huh?" Sam shrugged. "I guess she's kinda nice."

"She's great, man. Who will you go with?"

Sam smiled wickedly. A new plan had just formed in his mind. "No one," he replied, "but I can assure you, I'll be there and will have the time of my life."

"Take your seats, everyone," Rita called, entering the classroom.

Sam stared at her. Oh, yeah. We will have a blast, baby.

A week later, the school was in a frenzy preparing for the ball on Saturday. The girls were making plans on what dress they would wear, and the boys were thinking up tactics of how to make the girls lose their dresses.

Sam had been preparing for the day, as well. This time he was sure his strategy would work, and Rita would not be able to say no to him. Not in front of everyone.

He had rented a black tux which made him look fully grown-up. He couldn't wait to stand next to Rita on the dance floor. Every night, he was picturing her wearing a red maxi dress. It would make a great contrast to his clothes and yet, they would seem a match... as they were... a true match. He was certain that he was the man she should be with, and on Saturday, he would prove it to her.

Rita walked into the gym where the ball was being held and looked around. The school committee had done a great job with the decoration. It didn't resemble the old gym at all. She saw Chris standing near the stage where the band would be performing in a while and sidled up to him.

"You look amazing," he said, and gave her a peck on the cheek. He let his gaze trail her slender figure. She was wearing a black cocktail dress and her hair was swept up in a loose bun with a few locks hanging free on the sides of her face. "You're not bad yourself, Chris," she offered, and smiled. "I love the décor."

"Yes, it's great. Would you like a drink?"

"I thought there wouldn't be any drinks tonight."

"Only available to the teachers and those in moderation, as I can see Ms. Granger is in charge there," he replied, and laughed. "Come on." He took her hand and led the way.

The band took the stage and the first melody sounded. Some students started dancing, while others stood and watched, still reluctant to participate themselves.

Once the party had really got into the swing, Sam went to Rita. "Can I have this dance, Miss?" he asked, offering his hand. A slow song started then. He had arranged so with the singer. Seeing him talking to Rita was the band's cue to start playing the song he had chosen for this special occasion.

Rita hesitated for a minute but agreed to the dance, taking his hand.

Sam walked proudly with her to the center of the dance floor. The other students were watching them. He snaked his hands around her waist and pulled her closer. Not too close to scare her, but close enough to smell her delicious perfume. They swayed to the rhythm, and soon Sam forgot everything else.

He could feel her warm body under his fingertips and saw her pulse beating on her neck. He craved to kiss her there.

Slowly, he brought their bodies even closer. Rita didn't resist; she was moving along with the music. He nuzzled her neck with his nose, taking a whiff of her perfume. "You are so beautiful," he whispered into her ear.

He lifted his head and looked at her. She was smiling. A radiant smile he had longed to see. She closed her eyes and hummed the melody. He didn't want to waste any more time. He cupped her face and kissed her lips. He sensed her surprise, but caught in the moment it seemed, she gave in and responded to his tender kiss.

Rita opened her eyes, astonished, once it dawned to her who was touching her. She pushed Sam away, and without a warning, slapped him so hard that he lost his balance and fell on the couple dancing next to them. "How dare you!" Rita yelled.

The dance stopped abruptly and everyone stared at them. Sam got up, holding his cheek. It was stinging and burning hot. He wasn't sure if it was from the slap or his embarrassment.

"I can explain," he said and stood before her again. "I am in love with you."

He made a move to kiss her again, but Rita punched him in the stomach. At this point, she didn't care she was beating up a student. He had crossed a line, and now it was twice he had done so.

Sam fell to the floor again, clutching at his belly. Everyone laughed and pointed at him. The students had formed a circle and were watching the spectacle.

Chris soon joined them to see what the commotion was all about. When he saw Sam on the floor, he helped him up and asked Rita what was going on.

"He kissed me," she replied.

"He did what?" Chris glared at Sam, but he wouldn't allow himself to be the laughingstock of the town by making a jealous scene in front of all his students.

"Samuel Roberts, I'm calling your parents to pick you up. There will be consequences for your actions, I can assure you. As for you, Miss Evans, I think it would be wise to follow me to my office." Rita walked after them, fuming. For a moment, she wondered if there would be consequences of any kind for her, as well.
