Rewriting My Heart's Fate (Ethan and Evelyn)

Chapter 420

I quickened my footsteps, ran to him, and grabbed his arm.

"Mr. Grayson, why are you-" I couldn't even finish my sentence because one of the thugs yelled from behind me.

"Running away? You wish!" hollered one of them as they ran out of the studio. They were fast approaching.

Ethan pushed me so that I stood behind him. He shielded me from those thugs.

"Stop what you're doing!" he ordered, the air around him instantly turning cold and intimidating. "Touch her, and you'll regret what happens next!"

The thugs were taken aback by the sudden change in the atmosphere, and they stopped advancing. But it wasn't long before they regained their composure. So what if Ethan looked intimidating? It didn't mean that he could fight, right?

"Who are you? Who do you think you are? How dare you stop us from carrying out Mr. Carlos' orders!"

"Carlos?" Ethan let out a scornful laugh. "That scumbag just won't stop, huh?"

The looks on the thugs' faces shifted at Ethan's words. "Y-You're Ethan Grayson?"

"Yeah." Ethan stared at them coldly. "I'll repeat myself one last time. Don't mess with Evelyn, or I'll make all of you pay dearly!"

He then gestured for me to get into the car. Then, he started driving as if nothing happened.

"Wait! Stop, you two!" the leader hollered, pissed. "After them! Kill them!"

The other thugs were stunned speechless just now, but when they snapped out of their daze and wanted to go after us, Ethan's car was already out of their sight.

I sighed in relief, my tensed body finally relaxing now that the thugs were out of range.

"Thanks, Mr. Grayson." Looking at Ethan, I thanked him from the bottom of my heart. "If you hadn't come in time, I would've-"

Ethan helplessly ruffled my hair. "Call me at once if something like this happens again. Don't try to take them all alone."

I nodded. "Why did you suddenly go to the studio? Did you have someone follow me?"

Sensing the suspicion in my words, Ethan explained, "My informant just happened to tell me that Carlos ordered his men to ambush you somewhere near the studio. I was worried that something might happen, so I rushed over."

After a pause, he said, "You can say it's a coincidence."

He didn't answer my second question, but I decided to let it slide. There was a high probability that he was keeping an eye out for me.

"Don't overthink it," said Ethan as he reached for my hand.

Swn?

His hand was warm, and it warmed my cold hand. The feeling soothed my heart. Although we appeared to be nothing more than business partners on the surface, he had saved me from harm, which was more than what business partners would do for each other.

Soon, we arrived at my dorm. I was about to get out of the car when Ethan stopped me. "Evelyn, hold on," he said.

I turned back to look at him. "What's wrong?"

He didn't answer right away. Instead, he leaned closer to me and caressed my cheek.

"Do you know why I treat you so well?" he asked.

My breath caught in my throat. I could feel my heart racing. "Because we're... business partners?"

"That's just about right, but... " He paused as if to muster his courage. "Evelyn, I—"

It was at this moment that his phone started ringing, interrupting our conversation and leaving his words hanging.

He furrowed his brow, annoyed. Then, with much reluctance and frustration, he answered the phone.

"What is it?" he asked. "Right now... Okay. I got it."

His expression darkened as he hung up. After that, he turned to me, apologetic.

"Sorry, Evelyn," he said. "Something urgent came up at the company. I have to go and settle it right away."

I let out a silent sigh of relief. Somehow, I felt a little disappointed that he was leaving just like this.

I was, for the most part, glad for the interruption. I couldn't imagine how things would go if Ethan had finished his sentence.
