Chapter Jilted Bride 358
Chapter 358
The Carnegie family's car was parked downstairs. Ophelia opened the door for Theo. Then she walked around to the other side and got in.
Theo said, "Elia, tell me the truth. What's really going on with Kenneth?"
The car was quiet. It was just the two of them inside, while a few bodyguards stood about six feet
away outside.
Seeing that Ophelia wouldn't tell him, Theo didn't push any further. With something so serious happening and only her returning, it was already clear what that meant.
Something must have happened to Kenneth, or else he wouldn't have let Ophelia handle all this on her own.
Theo said, "Elia, I'll come and support you if necessary. With me around, Zayn won't dare do anything to you. That brat has been involved in many shady dealings these years. If Michael finds out, he'll be in trouble." Theo thought, 'If I hadn't arrived just in time today, Elia would have ended up being bullied. I know exactly what those bastards are plotting.
Seeing the angry expression on Theo's face, Ophelia found it a bit endearing. She felt really warm.
She said, "Don't worry, Theo. I can handle this."
It was quite obvious now that Zayn was backing Hardy and Francis up, and there probably was an even bigger backer behind Zayn.
Ophelia said, "But what kind of shady stuff has Zayn been up to these years?"
Theo pursed his lips and sighed. "The Huxley family is doing pharmaceutical business, right? Ahem... Let's not bring it up. If it were in the old days, what they're doing would make them traitors, total sellouts!
"People like that will do anything to make a buck. They team up with foreign pharmaceutical companies, ship domestic drugs abroad, slap a foreign label on them, and sell them back at inflated prices just because they're 'imported. The price skyrockets tenfold." Just talking about it made Theo angry.
He continued, "And those medical devices... They're all making money off us folks the same way."
Ophelia said, "Is the Huxley family really that out of fund?"
Theo said, "Humph. The Huxley family has big ambitions! Zayn doesn't just want his family to be one of the three major families in Dellanex. His ambitions have always been greater."
Ophelia lowered her eyes and thought about Theo's words.
Theo said, "Elia, at least Zayn still shows me some respect, so you'll have some time to handle this matter. If you need anything, just tell me."
"Okay." Ophelia nodded and stopped pondering,
Theo gave her a thoughtful look and took a deep breath.
He knew that even if she agreed readily, she'd be too embarrassed to ask for help when she really needed it.
She always wanted to handle everything by herself.

Theo gave her shoulder a firm squeeze and said, "Your shoulders are only this wide, so don't get too burdened."
Ophelia just smiled without saying anything.

Suddenly, Theo thought of something and said, "Oh, by the way, there's been a rumor going around that Sinclair Group is redeveloping the slums and has released an old virus. Have you heard about this?" Theo had only heard rumors, but he didn't quite believe it. Why would Sinclair Group want to develop the slums?
But there were definitely rumors online now, and the hospitals did have confirmed cases. The authorities just hadn't officially determined if it was the same virus from back then.
Ophelia didn't want to hide it from Theo.
She looked at him with determination and said, "It's not Sinclair Group. It's me."
Theo said, "What?"
He immediately turned his head and looked at her in surprise. Then as if recalling something, he gave a slight nod.
He understood it.
He said, "No wonder you came to ask me about what happened over twenty years ago." Theo's aged brows furrowed tightly, and he looked somewhat angry. "Why didn't you tell me about something this important earlier?" He let out a deep sigh, with a hint of nostalgia in his eyes.
After a moment of silence, he said, "Twenty years ago, that viral flu claimed many lives. Alas... Calling it a viral flu isn't really accurate. It should be called viral pneumonia, spread by the toxic gases from the explosion at the Wright family's factory.
"It started with symptoms like a cold, cough, and fever. Since it was winter, catching a cold seemed normal. No one paid much attention, thinking some cold medicine and fever reducers would do the trick.
"But soon, there were issues with breathing, and people were coughing and spitting up blood. By the time they went to the/ hospital, it was already too late.
"At that point, people had just two or three days left to live. Hospitals in Dellanex were overflowing. There was no treatment, and people could only watch them die."
Theo's jaw quivered slightly, and he kept shaking his head.
He continued, "Back then, Dellanex was like a ghost town. The streets were empty. Buses, subways, malls, and all public. facilities were shut down. Even getting food was a problem. Everyone was in a state of panic.
"Rich people could buy an island or even move abroad to stay safe. But ordinary people had no choice but to wait for their fate."
At that time, people were really helpless. Even the wealthy werent immune. Getting the disease meant waiting for the death.
Even though Ophelia had heard bits and pieces before, hearing from someone who experienced the disaster personally made it feel different.
She saw the despair back then in Theo's eyes.
Theo sighed, trying to calm himself.
He said, "Back then, human life was as worthless as grass. There were even extreme terror attacks where people who were terminally ill felt they were going to die anyway and decided to ke others with them, so they were shot dead on the spor

Such a dark and disastrous time was like the end of the world. No one would want to bring it up again.
He continued, "It lasted for over two months, and after numerous attempts, a miracle drug was finally developed. But buying it required a lot of money..."
Ophelia frowned and thought, 'What? This doesn't match what I know. I heard that there was no miracle drug back then.
