Chapter 321
He clamped his hand over his mouth just in time, too afraid to say anything else. But even if he hadn't spoken, Selena already knew.
If anything happened to Margot and her baby, no one could guess how Everett might explode. But Selena was innocent, and she had nothing to hide. She wasn't about to take the fall for something she didn't do. Besides, she had her own words to exchange with Everett. With a calm resolve, Selena said, "Derick, I appreciate your concern, but I've got to go. There's no stopping me."
"This..." Derick was speechless. He felt like a disaster was looming, sensing just how intense the situation was about to get. No wonder his tarot cards had warned of bad luck today, advising him to stay home.
Margot was wheeled into the operating room, and the red light above the door flicked on. As Selena got closer, she saw Everett. His hands and shirt were smeared with blood, some of it dried, making for a shocking sight. His brow was knitted tight, eyes locked on the closed door of the operating room, his face a blank slate, but every inch of him radiated a chilling intensity and a storm of suppressed emotions.
He pulled out a cigarette and lit it, momentarily forgetting that a pregnant woman was nearby who shouldn't be inhaling the smoke. It was the only way he knew to keep his anger at bay.
Selena took a seat a bit further away from him, waiting quietly. Derick, feeling the tension, wished he could just disappear. But seeing Selena bothered by the smoke, rubbing her nose and frowning, he quickly offered her an unopened face mask from his pocket. In a low voice, he said, "Ma'am, please wear this mask. There's a lot of flu going around, and you're expecting, so you shouldn't risk getting sick."
Selena knew he was just trying to be considerate, looking out for her feelings and dignity. She gave him a grateful smile, took the mask, and put it on.
Time dragged on, every second feeling more@nbearable than the last. Selena distracted herself with. her phone, and when she glanced up, she saw Everett leaning against the cold wall, staring blankly ahead like he was lost in his own world. He looked as if he might crumble at the slightest touch. Content Belongs to FindNovel
The last time he looked like this was also outside an operating room, when Josh was in surgery. He was just as distraught then. He didn't love her, so she had never seen this side of him, the side that showed his deep love for a woman. Now she saw it clearly. With Margot and their child in peril on the operating table, Everett looked ready to fall apart. It was tragically ironic that seeing him like this was what had once softened her heart. People said he was cold and detached, but only to those he didn't love.
With Josh and Margot, Selena could
feel the depth of his emotions. As the sun dipped lower, the warm breeze turned chilly. Now pregnant, Selena felt the cold more keenly and pulled her coat tighter around herself. She thought she saw him glance her way, though it might've been her imagination.
At last, the operating room door swung open. The doctor emerged, standing before Everett with a
deeply furrowed brow and a voice et
heavy with regret. "Mr. Everett, the child was delivered, but because the fall put such strain on the mother, it was a difficult birth. The baby... didn't survive." Content bélongs to FindNovel
"I'm sorry, we did everything we could." The light in Everett's eyes vanished, leaving a terrifying void. Selena's heart sank, plummeting to the depths.
