Chapter 93
Katherine's
POV
"I know what you're worried about," I said, and I went to Xavier's side to calm him down. His face had darkened, and he had this dark aura around him, and that was just because I told him what had happened at work today.
I knew John had become suspicious of me, and it wasn't just today that he attacked me undercover. I just opened the door wider for him to have me killed faster.
"But I don't want him to continue sitting in the seat where my father used to sit and destroy the company my father had built. I will not stop until he is relieved of his duties and behind bars. Even if it meant that we died together. I am willing to sacrifice my life for the truth." "Die together," Xavier said coldly.
I nodded in response, and a trace of sadness crossed Xavier's eyes.
Was he falling deeper in love with me?
"Do you have any idea what kind of deals John made and with what kind of people?" Xavier suddenly asked.
"I know," I answered, "money laundering."
Xavier raised his eyebrows and shook his head.
"It's a little more complicated than just money laundering," he growled under his breath.
I sighed.
Xavier has gotten more and more difficult over the last couple of days. There was something bothering him, and I just couldn't put my finger on it.
Xavier turned silent, and he looked at me with serious eyes.
"Are you sure you want to get involved in this mess?" He suddenly asked, pinning my gaze. "You need to understand that if you say yes, you will have to take care of all the things he was involved in."
"I know," I answered. "And that is why I fired the chief financial officer today. I didn't give him a chance to tell the board the truth, but I did ensure to get John worried and afraid."
Xavier's face twisted in anger, and he turned around and stalked out of the room. I wasn't sure if it was because he was worried or if I made him unhappy, but it did hurt my feelings.
I sighed and took a seat.
Doesn't Xavier understand that I need to do this?
Doesn't he understand the importance of my revenge?
Xavier acted very coldly the next morning when he dropped me off at work.
I shook my head as I made my way into the building, finding Kelly sitting at the reception desk.
"Morning, Luna," she greeted me, and I nodded and smiled as she let me pass through the turnstile. She has been a great help to me.
I made my way to the elevator, got in, and waited for the doors to close.
A breath escaped my lips as my thoughts wandered off to Xavier. I couldn't bear seeing him like that. This sadness in his eyes was slowly killing me.
The elevator announced my arrival, and I lifted my gaze to see Amanda standing wide-eyed at the reception desk.
What is wrong with her?
Did something happen?
I ignored her and casually walked to my office.
Odd, I thought, as I saw Sarah's desk deserted; usually, she would wait until I had arrived before she would leave her desk.
I dropped my bag on my table and switched on my PC, then opened my emails. My eyes widened when I noticed an email from Sarah offering her resignation.
"F*ck!" I gasped under my breath as I opened and started to read through the email.
Dear Ms. King:
I sincerely apologize for doing it this way, and I hope you will forgive me, but I need to tender my resignation as your PA.
After what was revealed in the meeting yesterday, I can no longer act as if everything is fine in the company. I should have known the day Mr. John King appointed me as P.A. and instructed me to keep an eye on you that something was wrong. He offered me additional payments for my services and told me you were set to bring the company down and that you were incompetent.
I feel sick to my stomach about being part of his scam, and the only reason I accepted his offer was because I needed to look after my little brother. My parents passed away a few months ago, and I became the only breadwinner.
I hope you can forgive me in the future.
Thank you for having me for so long. You are truly an extraordinary person. Yours sincerely.
Sarah
A trace of pity and sadness moved through my heart. I should have done a background check on Sarah, yet when she started to trust me, I believed she would have come and told me on her own time and informed me why she was involved with John. Now I can just assume that John took full advantage of her and used it to his benefit.
I sighed and shook my head.
It would be a great loss for the company. Sarah was such a smart girl. It's a pity that she got involved in all of this. I wouldn't classify her as greedy due to her need for extra money. It was purely to support her family, and John took advantage of the situation and bribed her to do all kinds of nasty things. I guess if the situation had been different, Sarah would have climbed the corporate ladder and could have ended up as a senior in the accounts department with her skills in projects and tenders.
Thinking of this, I suddenly felt worried. If John got to know about Sarah's resignation, he would find his next victim to replace her.
I sighed, picked up the office phone, and called HR.
Ten minutes later, Kelly walked into my office, smiling and holding a cup of coffee in her hand for me.
"Luna," Kelly said as she walked closer, "you wanted to see me?"
"Yes," I said, gesturing for her to sit.
I knew Kelly well, and she was someone I could trust.
"What's this about, Luna?" she asked, searching my gaze.
I guess HR hasn't informed her yet.
"Sarah has resigned," I answered. "I need you to fill the position."
Surprise followed on Kelly's face, but she hid it quickly and smiled, followed by a nod of her head.
"As you wish, Luna," she said, "when do you want me to start?"
"Today," I said, looking her up and down. "It has been arranged with HR already."
"I will go get my things," she said, getting up.
The rest of the day was quiet. I continued with my investigation into John, finding even more evidence.
Around four p.m., Kelly knocked on my office door.
"Luna, the car has arrived," she said, and I knitted my eyebrows together, confused.
"Car?" I asked, sounding more confused than I was, "I didn't call a car."
"It's your birthday dinner tonight," Kelly said, searching my gaze. "Alpha Xavier sent the car to pick you up."
"Sh*t!" I jumped to my feet. "I totally forgot!"
Xavier reserved a table at Silverado Restaurant as an early birthday present for us tonight.
Tomorrow will be my actual twenty-first birthday, and he gave Kelly instructions to make sure it was a huge celebration. We will be dining at the Sun Set Beach Hotel tomorrow night with around five hundred people. Kelly turned around, and seconds later she returned to my office with a huge white box.
"Alpha Xavier sent this," she said, walking closer to my desk, where I was busy packing the reports I was working into my bag.
"He says it is part of your birthday present."
I froze and looked at Kelly, surprised. She quickly took the last few steps to my desk and placed the box on the desk.
I already knew what it was; Xavier must have known I would forget.
I open the box, and my hand instinctively moves over the beautiful gray satin material. I slowly pulled the dress from the box and hung it in front of me.
"It is surely gorgeous," Kelly mused.
"And I am sure you had your hand in this?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
"I just do what I am told," she said, chuckling. "Now, Luna, I suggest you get dressed. We don't want our Alpha to wait for you."
I nodded, and Kelly closed the blinds in my office.
"Call me if you need any help," she said, closing the door behind her.
Ten minutes later, I checked my makeup in a small hand-held mirror, then loosened my auburn hair and let it fall free around my lower back.
"This is going to have to do," I told myself.
I grabbed my bag, opened the office door, gave Kelly a nervous smile, and rushed toward the elevator.
The driver waited for me at the reception, and I followed him to the car.
When I arrived at the restaurant, I never expected it to be so beautiful. Xavier created such a memorable birthday!
