Chapter 779
Chloe hesitated a bit before grabbing her phone. She wasn't keen on seeing Connor get played. As she pressed it to her ear, a deep voice greeted her, "Cassie, where are you guys?"
Chloe blinked in surprise, "How'd you know it's Cassie?" She could barely recognize the voice herself. Hearing Chloe, Connor felt a wave of relief wash over him. It wasn't Cassie's voice he picked up on, but her distinctive tone. Only Cassie called Chloe "dear" with that unique accent that seemed to lift at the end of each sentence.
Connor dodged Chloe's question, simply asking, "Where are you?" Chloe wasn't about to answer his question either. "What do you want?" she countered.
"Can't I call just because?" Connor's tone rubbed Chloe the wrong way. But she wasn't backing down, "If it's nothing, I'm hanging up."
"Grandma Marian's sick. We need to swing by the family home tonight," he said quickly.
"Sick? How did she suddenly fall ill? Is it serious?" Chloe's demeanor shifted to concern. Truth was, Connor had just concocted that excuse on the fly. He just didn't want Chloe to hang up, maybe he just wanted an excuse to see her. But once the words were out, he had to roll with it.
"Where are you? I'll come get you," he offered. Chloe promptly gave him her address.
After they hung up, Cassie smirked, "Grandma Marian and Jeffery were at the private clinic visiting my granddad just yesterday. Marian looked fit as a fiddle-he's definitely bluffing." "Really?" Chloe asked, surprised.
"Absolutely, I video-chatted with granddad last night. He told me himself," Cassie confirmed. Chloe furrowed her brows, wondering if Connor was lying to her.
Cassie chimed in, "You're just too soft-hearted. I was just teasing him a bit and you couldn't handle it."
Chloe was already gathering her stuff. Regardless of the truth, she had to see for herself. While packing, she said, "It's you I can't bear to upset mot him. He's got a vengeful streak. If you tick him off, you'll be the one paying for it."
Cassie, still nibbling on her chicken wings, shrugged, "I don't buy it. I've got nothing on him, why should I be scared?"
Meanwhile, Connor, having just hung up, was already plotting his next move. He rang up the family home to check on Marian's whereabouts Lando was laid up with gout at the Bloomsbury Hot Springs Resort. If his memory was right, Marian and Jeffery had visited him there the day before. The butler confirmed his suspicions: Jeffery and Marian were planning to stick around the resort for a while. Meaning, Marian wasn't
at the family home.
Connor gave the butler a few instructions before hanging up. He was set to head out and pick up Chloe. But before he revved up the engine, he dialed another number. The name Winston popped up on his screen.
Chloe sat at home, waiting. Connor
was taking his sweet time. After a while, there was a knock on the door. Expecting Connor, Chloe went to open it. But instead of Connor, there stood Winston. Both of them stared at each other, momentarily caught off guard.
