Although Josiah wore a smile on his face, Miranda knew exactly what was going on. She could tell right away that he wasn’t happy.

This smile was hiding something sharp,

Josiah Miranda lowered her voice, giving him a slow shake of the head, signaling him not to do anything rash.

‘Is she really this nervous? he wondered. Josiah forced a smile, fastrated. ‘Does Grandma think I am going to do something?”

The atmosphere became tense. Sienna and Cedric exchanged a ook before both stood up.

“Miranda,” Cedric said with a smile, “Thank you for your hospitality tonight, but it’s getting late. Sienna and I will head out now and let you rest.

“You’re leaving?” Miranda quickly turned, forcing a smile as she still stood in front of Josiah

“Yeah.” Sienna nodded in agreement. “Miranda, I’ll come see you again soon.”

Miranda didn’t insist on keeping them this time. She nodded and said, “Alright, Cedric, Sienna’s in your hands now. You better make sure she gets home safe.”

“Don’t worry, Miranda,” he smiled.

“Goodbye, Miranda, Sienna said.

As Sienna turned to leave, Cedric extended his hand toward her She understood what he meant. Josiah was watching.

Sienna hesitated for just a fraction of a second before accepting his hand and smiling gently. “Let’s go.”

“Okay.” They walked out hand in hand.

Behind them, Josiah scoffed loudly, “Grandma, the people are gone. Can you let go of me now?”

Miranda paused for a moment, then released him, though she still watched him with concern. “Are you alright?”

out. “What could be wrong with me?”

Josiah shook his arm out.

‘Oh really?‘ Miranda thought, hearing the sarcasm in his voice. You…”

She sighed in exasperation and poked his forehead. “I know you’re upset, Josiah. You’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about Sienna lately.”

Josiah gave a low, cold laugh.

Josiah,” Miranda said, her tone suddenly serious. “Listen to me. Just forget it. Sienna really doesn’t like you anymore. She and Cedric are doing just fine.”

Even Miranda was helping them. Josiah held his frustration in, answering casually, “I never said I was going to do anything to them. You’re the one acting like you’re worried about me.”

“Really?” Miranda didn’t believe him

“Really.” Josiah let out a low chuckle. “What’s the alternative? Do you think I’m the kind of guy who would give up myself for a woman? Besides, Sienna hasn’t reached the point where I’m the one she needs

That actually made some sense. Miranda nodded. “True, you don’t really like her the way Cedric does. Honestly, I think it’s more about you not liking the idea of someone who used to like you suddenly liking someone else.”,

Josiah stiffened. “Is that what you think, Grandma? You’re saying I’m like this because of that?”

“Yeah, Miranda said, nodding seriously, “I think that’s exactly it low else can you explain it? All those years, and you never thought twice about her.”

Josiah paused, caught off guard, unable to respond.

“I’ll pass in time. Cedric’s different. He really likes Sienna,” said Miranda.

Miranda went on, her voice filled with a touch of wistfulness. “I just hope those two work things out. If they end up together, it’ll be worth it.

“At least I won’t feel like I raised her for nothing. It’ll give me some peace with her grandmother?

That night, Josiah stood under the shower, warm water pouring down, hitting his back, covered in scars.

With his eyes closed, the words Miranda had said echoed in his mind. You don’t really like Sienna. Your can’t stand seeing someone who used to like you suddenly fall for someone else. Why didn’t you care about her all these years?”

Is that really the case? Is it? Yeah, it’s true. That’s it. No doubt about it,’ he wondered.

The next day, a weekend. Josiah came downstairs, not expecting to see Sienna there, talking with Miranda.

Up already?” Miranda waved at him when she saw him. “You’re just in time. I need to talk to you about something.” “What’s up?” Josiah sat down casually on the couch, grabbed an orange from the fruit plate, and began peeling it slowly. “It’s like this,” Miranda began. “Pick a time, and go with Sienna to the courthouse.”

Josiah froze for a moment, lifting his head to look at Sienna. She came all the way here this early just for this?

Sienna met his gaze and nodded. Speaking slowly, she said, “I promised Miranda. Now that I’m not on my own anymore, and I want to be with Cedric, I need to take care of this.”

“Yeah. Miranda nodded in agreement. “It needs to be done quickly. Otherwise, if the Brawne family finds out you haven’t gotten the papers yet, it’ll cause trouble.”

She shot a look at Josiah. “You need to set a time for this. If you mess it up and ruin Sienna’s chances, I won’t forgive you.” She’d initially wanted to leave a way out for Sienna, but that wasn’t needed anymore.

“Got it.” Josiah flipped through his phone.

Miranda kept on, “The sooner, the better.”

Josiah frowned, feeling irritated, and said absentmindedly, “How about first thing Monday morning?”

“Monday morning?” Miranda seemed concerned. “Won’t that interfere with work?”

“It’s fine.” Josiah shook his head. “I’ll be a little late, but it won’t cause any big problems.”

Alright then.” Miranda made up her mind and patted Sienna’s hand. “It’s settled. Are you relieved now?”

“Okay, thank you, Miranda Sienna smiled and nodded, but inside she thought, ‘I won’t be truly relieved until I have the papers in hand. Only then will it be over.

“Miranda” Now that her goal was accomplished, Sienna stood up have to leave now. I’m meeting Cedric

“Oh Miranda’s face lit up with a teasing grin. “Well, I won’t keep you then. Go on, and don’t keep Cedric waiting

“Yes, Miranda Sienna smiled, and Miranda reluctantly walked her to the door.

Josiah didn’t move. He finished peeling the orange and popped piece into his mouth. As he chewed, his face scrunched up

in disgust.

“Ugh. What kind of orange is this? It’s so sour” he said.

Monday morning, Cedric, having taken the day off at Sienna’s request, drove to 12th Avenue to pick her up for their trip to the courthouse.

He did it for two reasons. First, the memory of that walk back from Bacchus Bridge still haunted her, and she feared something might go wrong again.

Second, she was worried Josiah might change his mind at the last minute, and with Cedric there, he wouldn’t dare.

The car stopped in front of the courthouse. Cedric leaned over and unbuckled Sienna’s seatbelt. He spoke softly. “Do you want me to come in with you?

“Not for now” Sienna shook her head.

“Alright” Cedric didn’t push it but gently reminded her. “If you need anything, just call me. I’ll be here waiting for you”

“Okay, thanks Sienna took a deep breath, opened the car door, and got out.

At the same time, Josiah stepped out of his Bentley, elegant as ever.

It was just like four years ago when they were both heading in the same direction. Back then, it was to start a life together. Now, it was to go their separate ways.
